Materials and processes
Composites are a fairly new group of construction materials. Due to their nature, composites demand a specific approach as regards design and production. CTC’s material specialists have considerable know-how and experience with both. The connecting and very important link between design and production of composite solutions.
Complex matter
Composites are compound materials. Basically it comes down to fibers that are responsible for stiffness and strength. A synthetic material forms a matrix surrounding the fibers. Depending on the synthetic material chosen, it transfers the loads and protects the fibers. Many combinations with other materials are possible. Think of rigid foam, metal or wood as the core material in sandwich constructions.
The properties of a composite strongly depend on the components of which it is composed. The possibilities are virtually infinite. Furthermore there is only very limited standardization concerning nomenclature and properties. The process conditions and methods of measurement to determine properties vary strongly. For CTC this is enough reason to have its own group of experts in this field.
Laboratory Composite Technology Centre
CTC's material experts have their own workshop and laboratory, where process simulation are carried out . Test panels are produced there and the mechanical properties of the materials are determined.
|
Main advantages of our own laboratory:
-
We determine the data needed for the design ourselves, independent of suppliers of materials. The available information concerning the properties of the materials is therefore much more extensive and more specific than in a 'book of tables'.
-
The data can be compared easily as it is always determined in the same manner.
-
A good picture emerges of what the market can supply.
-
By means of simulation of production, CTC can determine the maximum result that can be achieved.
-
Optimizing takes place during the design phase. CTC examines the manufacturability of the product before it is actually taken into production.
-
Active production can be supported promptly with the assessment of new materials to be used (purchasing support). Also adapting the process conditions to local circumstances or the solution of non-conformities is simple.

CTC continually investigates the properties of new composites under various conditions. We also look at ways in which we can influence these characteristics positively. CTC often conducts this research in cooperation with or on behalf of a material manufacturer. In this way we contribute to the development of new products aimed at specific applications.
Material and process specifications.
The results make their way to research reports, test reports, and advice to the client. However the most important things are the material and process specifications. These are of course, linked to the product design and the planned production. They determine, within which limits, the properties of a material and the parameters of a process should be kept. In this way we make sure that the finished product is reliable and as desired.
Due to its own frequent testing and the regular feedback of clients we have, as CTC, over the years, gained a good insight into the (im)possibilities. Therefore CTC is able to draw up the specifications so widely that various suppliers can provide suitable material. In this way the process is feasible under various conditions.
VKCN
CTC is a member of Vereniging Kunststof Composieten Nederland (VKCN), the branch organization for the Dutch Composites Industry. This way we endeavor to contribute actively to the development of composite applications.
